ABSTRACT

If bereavement can have detrimental effects upon physical and mental health, what can be done to prevent these effects from occurring and by whom should this help be given? A wide range of services for bereaved people have been developed over the years but their quality varies greatly and we must look to research to decide between them. A large number of systematic studies of the outcome of bereavement interventions have now been carried out and we no longer need to start from scratch in our attempts to provide bereavement services. Unfortunately the sheer number of studies make it impractical to review them all here.
