ABSTRACT
In Ashworthy, as in much of Western Europe, the conjugal family is a primary unit in the social structure. All but one of the farms are ‘family farms’ and land-holding, land use and agricultural practice are organized around the farmer, his wife and his children. Farming and land-holding therefore share many general characteristics in common with other areas of family farming in Britain and elsewhere.
