Kant’s argument in the first edition1 is of a looser texture. Curiously enough space plays a more prominent part than in the argument of the second edition. As we have seen,2 in the interval between the two editions space was recognised by Kant to be of vital importance for the proof of substance; but apparently when the new edition was about to be published, he decided that he must rest his case primarily upon the character of time.
