ABSTRACT

In the understanding of nature, of the physical, one of the fundamental issues we have encountered throughout this inquiry is that of continuity, and the basic question which has always arisen is that of the ontological status of continuity. This issue had been brought into prominence by Aristotle, and it remained a fundamental issue in the seventeenth century. One most important aspect of it was the problem of the relation of the physical and the mathematical, and closely bound up with this was the problem of the infinite.
