ABSTRACT

Not only is a man private from other people, but he is also private from his past and future selves. It is not ‘here’ alone that is private, but also ‘now’; … in some degree, however inadequately, I mirror the universe by the present contents of my mind. But is this possible? And how is it possible? And how far is it possible? These are some of the fundamental problems with which the present work is concerned. Continued analysis gradually narrows us down from the astronomical universe to the mind of the astronomer, and from his mind as exemplified in his whole life to his mind as it exists in a single moment. But from this pin point, this tiny camera obscura, … we can throw the light of knowledge over vast stretches of time and space, and discover the unreality of the walls of our supposed subjective prison.
