ABSTRACT

The term ‘faculty’ may be encountered in several educational contexts. Psychologists – sometimes termed faculty psychologists – are interested in such faculties of the mind as memory, imagination and reason. It may also be used in the plural, and perhaps inexpertly, by tutors advising students to ‘sharpen’ or ‘apply’ their ‘critical faculties’ to deconstruct texts or develop arguments more effectively.
