ABSTRACT

A sabbatical gives provision for an established member of an educational institution to pursue a particular set of goals for a specified period that cannot be developed in normal working circumstances. In an institution of higher education, for example, it is often possible to apply for sabbatical for a term or a longer period to concentrate on a programme of research that may often involve travel away from the institution. In some institutions this might be arranged on a regular basis, perhaps every five years, while in others it might only be provided in particular circumstances. Usually, sabbatical leave is awarded with the usual pay for the employee involved, but on some occasions unpaid leave might be given. In most cases it is expected that a report be provided for the institution at the end of the sabbatical leave to explain the extent to which it has achieved its purposes. In schools and other educational institutions in different countries, regular sabbatical leave may also be provided for a range of purposes.
