ABSTRACT

Adult education has a long tradition among the Jewish people. Study of the Law (‘Torah’) was regarded, not as something to be ‘got through’ in childhood, but as a life-long task, an integral part of the Jewish way of life. Maimonides, 1 in his summarized Code, writes:

Every man in Israel is in duty bound to study the Torah. Be he rich or poor—young or old—and even with wife and children, he should set aside time for study both day and night. Till when? Till the day of his death.
