ABSTRACT

Indicators of agricultural incomes (Table 45.1b) highlight the enormous disparity in per capita gross national product (GNP) (from more than US$20,000 to less than US$500). Agriculture is a relatively small share of the wealthiest economies, compared to more than a third of gross domestic product (GDP) in west and east Africa and south Asia. All of the regions have expanding economies, but many are barely (or not) keeping pace with population growth. Investment in agricultural research, a crude indicator of adaptability to future climatic and economic shocks, also varies widely.
