ABSTRACT

The idea of community tourism is simple: you can help local people and still have a good holiday, simply by going on tours that involve local communities. In other words, it is mutually beneficial trade. In practice, however, there is no one single model for community-based tourism and the projects in our directory are owned and managed in a variety of ways. Rather than lay down a rigid set of rules for community tourism, this chapter discusses the general principles that lie behind such holidays.
