ABSTRACT

Politicians and educationalists have always argued about the purposes of education and its scope, in particular about the relative value of depth and breadth. The fortunate and able few can opt for the International Baccalaureate, which offers both breadth and depth. Otherwise, the non-vocational choice in England has seemed to be between the depth of A levels and the breadth offered by an ‘English baccalaureate’. The Welsh Baccalaureate is a current practical illustration of an alternative and comparable model.
