ABSTRACT

The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive guide to the AQA Critical Thinking AS Level specification. The structure of the book mirrors precisely that of the specification itself and there are two chapters offering a step-by-step guide on how to tackle both units of the exam. Because there is no specific ‘content’ to be covered, this book draws on as wide a variety of resources as possible in order to equip the learner with the required set of thinking skills (more of this in this Introduction). It is hoped that not only will this make the material more engaging, but that it will also illuminate just how relevant and applicable these skills are to all areas of study, not just the exam itself. There are plenty of textbooks out there which claim to offer an ‘easy’ introduction to critical thinking. This is not one of them. Heeding Einstein’s remark that ‘things should be made as simple as possible, but not any simpler’, a real effort has been made to avoid the kind of oversimplification that fails to do justice to the subtlety of the subject. Needless to say, those of you ready for a challenge will not be disappointed!
