ABSTRACT

The Christian ethics inevitably, through the emphasis laid upon sexual virtue, did a great deal to degrade the position of women. The Stoic-Christian view requires a conception of virtue very different from Aristotle's, since it must hold that virtue is as possible for the slave as for his master. Christian ethics disapproves of pride, which Aristotle thinks a virtue, and praises humility, which he thinks a vice. The selections will amply reveal, Lord Russell shaved the nonsense from a great variety of popular myths and left each one naked with no place to hide. Soon after World War II it became clear to Lord Russell and other eminent scientists that it was their supreme moral duty to warn the world of the impending danger of universal death. Lord Russell was perplexed by the morality of governments that seem to find little difficulty in raising enormous sums for the purpose of killing people.
