ABSTRACT
Document containing a full list of the ship’s cargo, extracted from information shown on the bills of lading. Each bill of lading consists normally of one sheet of paper and relates to one consignment; the information is generally laid out in boxes covering one side of the sheet and the conditions of carriage are printed on the reverse. The manifest does not follow this format: essentially it is a statement of the bills of lading and has headings taken from the bills which are normally displayed side by side across the page. A page of a manifest could contain one bill of lading or, more often, many, depending on the amount of information relating to each bill of lading. The headings normally include: shipper, consignee, marks and numbers, description of the cargo including its packaging, its dimensions, weight and any remarks as to its condition.
