ABSTRACT
The business of moving goods internationally involves many different types of activity. It starts with the sales contract between the exporter and the importer. This may be concluded with or without the intervention of intermediaries or agents.Terms of sale may be as agreed between the two parties or may be standard, such as Incoterms, produced by the International Chamber of Commerce. The parties agree between themselves as to the responsibilities of each. The exporter is required to make the goods available to his customer at a specific place, depending on the agreement he has with that customer. This might be, for example, the factory of manufacture (ex works), the port of loading (FOB), the port of discharge (C&F or CIF), or the customer’s premises (delivered). There are a number of variations of these.
