      ABSTRACT

Many surveys are carried out at different intervals for different purposes. The greatest number are surveys of ships done by classification society surveyors, mostly in order to maintain class (see Classification societies). Some are done by independent surveyors in connection with the charter of the ship or the condition or quantity of the cargo.
