ABSTRACT

This chapter presents that there are a good number of differences between PDE and EModE. It refers to RP often called BBC English or the Queens English. The chapter provides several points mentioned pronunciation changes. Stress as well as pronunciation changes with time. One source of information comes from contemporary accounts what people of the time say about pronunciation matters. Sometimes the information comes almost in passing, through incidental mentions of pronunciation. Spelling reformers like Gill fall into a group of people who provide much more than passing comments on Elizabethan pronunciation. They are known as orthoepists. The OED defines an orthoepist as a person who studies the pronunciation of words. The pronunciation of Greek was based on the models provided by contemporary Greeks. Orthoepists were systematic in their approach to spelling, and often tried to use phonetic description. Certainly the argument about Greek led to the articulation of views about the relationship between spelling and pronunciation.
