ABSTRACT

Theodosius the Great was the last ruler of the whole Empire. Following his death in 395, it was divided between his two sons, the elder, Arcadius, succeeding to his power in Constantinople, while the younger, Honorius, reigned in Rome. There was nothing to wonder at here, for the Empire had been divided previously, and in any case it was becoming more regionalised. But within 100 years unforeseen circumstances that developed quite quickly caused the territory under Honorius to pass beyond the control of the Empire.
