ABSTRACT

Methods of regulation vary widely throughout the world with a steady gradation of control, starting with countries which allow journalists a fairly free hand and ending with countries that have almost total state control. The two main types of regulation revolve around those countries with democracy and constitutions and those without. However, the state of development of a nation will have an affect on the level of regulation and the expectation of the style of journalism, with those that are fully developed normally being more critical of government than those where support of the nation, its people and achievements is seen as more important. While there are always exceptions, the key blocks with regard to press freedom and journalism ethics are the Western world: US, Canada, Europe and Australia. Eastern Europe and much of Asia now has a free press, but it is not always willing to challenge government. Finally, there is Africa, the Middle East, South America and China where controls are often much more stringent and where democracy and consequently press freedom is much harder to find.
