ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the 'Lighthouse Keepers Lunch' case study to exemplify how presenting challenges to children can enhance learning. The teachers had decided to plan an integrated topic with a story as a starting point. Therefore it brought together Science, Geography and History. The importance of the text remaining a discrete area of study in its own right is central to good practice. The teachers spent two weeks exploring the lighthouse keepers lunch in relation to: text structure; puzzles and patterns, choices and consequences, chronology, character studies. The approach to assessment in this case study was of particularly effective and we have included it here for this reason. Reflection and assessment are at the core of successful planning. The teachers reviewed the practical experiences that the children had during the course of this unit of work, as well as recognising the enthusiasm with which the challenges were tackled.
