ABSTRACT

Before beginning planning, it is necessary to consider our schools format and approach. Schools that are committed to actively involving children in their own learning will naturally be equally committed to ensuring that staff, both new and existing, feels that they have ownership of the schools curriculum and that contributions from all teachers are not just welcomed but are vital. Both schools from which our case studies were taken had spent time in departments and whole-school staff meetings developing their approach to the creative curriculum. Good teachers share the learning intention of each lesson with the children and together they discuss how everyone will know the extent to which these learning objectives have been met. In some classes, a traffic light system is used whereby children use colour coding to show the extent to which they have met the success criteria. Some children share their work with peers and discuss the evidence that shows learning objectives have been met.
