ABSTRACT

In Exodus, the Israelites encamped at Sinai; in the next book, Leviticus, there is virtually no travel at all. They stay where they are, and Moses dispenses their elaborate and comprehensive Law. Besides the personal and ritual aspects, there is an emphasis on the foundation of the priesthood, withAaron as archetype, that suggests an intention to authenticate and justify its power. The status of the priesthood, after all, was destroyed with the destruction of the state of Judah.
