ABSTRACT
Few argue now that John the disciple of Jesus actually wrote the fourth Gospel, although he may well have provided some material for it. Both the author and the date have been much disputed; but this is a later work than the other three, probably written towards the end of the first century ad, at a time when the rift between conventional and Christian Jews had become irremediable.
