ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines and evaluates the different types of interview and explains how to compile the interview schedule or interview guide. It shows how to conduct the data analysis. Then, it also contains a discussion of online interviews and group interviews or focus groups; problem of poor response rate; the reluctance of respondents to provide full and truthful answers; and a discussion of prompting and probing. Respondents are encouraged to talk about the issues that are raised by the researcher. Prompting and probing are two of the most popular techniques used to overcome the problems. Interviewer bias is one of the most common threats to the validity of research projects that use interviews as their main method of data collection. The in-depth interview can be viewed as extended conversation for the purpose of data collection. Content analysis is a clear and effective approach to data analysis. An alternative approach to data analysis of a transcript is to engage in a form of narrative analysis.
