ABSTRACT
The authors of the US Constitution could take a number of lessons from this experience. Strong and unchecked executive leaders clearly could damage their country. Ill-advised and distant leaders could become out of touch with their countrymen. These perceptions were aired in the discussions at the 1787 Philadelphia Convention. There was little enthusiasm for a system that might replace George III with a home-grown executive in similar mould.
