ABSTRACT

The German ambassador in London, Lichnowsky, was one of those German diplomats who tried to persuade the officials and politicians in Berlin that the British in general – and Grey in particular – were peacefully inclined and that there was no need to fear an attack on Germany. On the contrary, he suggested to the Chancellor, Bethmann Hollweg on 20 December 1912, that there was a real opportunity for an Anglo-German rapprochement if Germany avoided a direct threat to British naval power.
