ABSTRACT

The plenum approved the ‘various types of aid’ extended to Afghanistan to prevent ‘attacks and interventions’, the aim of which was to ‘suffocate the Afghan revolution and to transform Afghanistan into a base of military aggression on the southern frontiers of the Soviet Union’. It also called on the Politburo to ‘strengthen the fraternal union of the socialist states, peaceful co-existence, support the just struggle of peoples for their freedom and independence, the slowing down of the arms race, the maintenance and development of international détente, mutual economic, scientific and cultural cooperation . . .’
