ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at typography the art, craft and technique of working with letterforms, and discusses the use of type in the media. It provides a description of typographic terminology and practices together with guidance on how best to use type for websites and in print. The chapter also explains the pitfalls and benefits of sourcing type from the Web. Cascading style sheets (CSS) are web pages that contain all of the instructions for the structure of a web page, including the typefaces, styles, leading, colours and all other text formatting options. Type on a page is the visual representation of the spoken word, typography is the technique used to indicate tone of voice, character, inflexion and emphasis. The type design for media products is part of their branding, the style of type can indicate to a reader or visitor not only the overall identity of the title, but also the purpose and function of individual items.
