ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the cultural weight and significance of imagery, how this both affects and is used by the media, moral questions raised by photojournalism and digital photo manipulation. The boundaries between broadcast and web media have become increasingly blurred, online news reporting now fully utilises video and sound to give a richer form of delivery. In order to work on both print and web titles we will need to understand pixel imagery. When we come to specify imagery, it is important to be aware of the media in which it is to appear, and any target dimensions. Printing presses require high-resolution images and web technology and software uses low resolution. Most browsers include media players, but it is a good idea, for those people that have older computers or slow Internet connections, to offer a hot link from a multimedia website to a mirrored HTML version the same website without rich media such as animation or video.
