ABSTRACT

The most important historical problem that dominates the reigns of the later Stuarts is to assess the importance and signifi cance of the Glorious Revolution. That problem will be addressed in the remaining chapters of this book. But fi rst it is important to set out the main features of the political and religious context of the period in which the Glorious Revolution took place and when its long-term effects on the Church and State became apparent. This will be done fi rst of all for the whole period from 1689 to 1714, and then for the reign of William III, 1689-1702.
