Introduction to Part I book
This part examines the historical context within which social policy in Britain has developed over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and seeks to establish the background behind much of contemporary social policies and welfare structures. An historical perspective helps us to understand better the present climate of social policy and may lead us to speculate about the future. We also may be able to trace the development of particular social policies over a considerable period of time and to understand what is often the apparently cyclical nature of policy developments.
