Introduction to Part II book
In this part we turn to the contemporary social policy environment and to five aspects in particular. The climate for much government activity, and more especially social policy, since the mid-1970s has been one of great turmoil. The welfare state in Britain has undergone a crisis of confidence, brought about largely by external factors. This led in the 1980s and 1990s to a reassessment of its own position within the British polity, including revision of the role of government itself and a re-evaluation of how governments finance, structure and deliver public services.
