Though both the air campaign in the West and the U-boat war were escalating in 1942 and early 1943, it was the war on land in the East that consumed most German attention and resources in this period. Once more Hitler would seek to cripple the Soviet Union, and once more -this time definitively — he would be thwarted by the strength and resilience of the Red Army In North Africa, meanwhile, the Allies would at last manage to defeat Axis forces decisively.
