ABSTRACT
As a teacher, I am always surprised at the range of interpretations 25 different
pupils can bring to one essay title. This can lead to feelings of frustration as,
despite my best efforts, some of the students do not appear to have understood
the importance, or even grasped key concepts, principles or terminology. In terms
of evaluating my own teaching, this is the most objective, useful and direct
feedback I ever receive from my pupils. It allows me to evaluate and assess what
I have taught effectively and, crucially, the areas that I have not. This, more than
any other type of information or feedback, informs the changes I need to make
to my delivery, subject material, or how I assess pupil learning and progress.
