ABSTRACT
What is the place of the Bible in RE? The Bible must be properly taught as it is essential to an understanding of Christianity and, as the major Western religious text, has influenced Western civilization over a long period. As such it is inevitably a controversial and much debated text. We question reductionist approaches to the Bible and opt for an approach which looks for truth and opens up critical reflection. Pupils need to be taught to approach the Biblical material intelligently and we offer two examples of how a teacher might handle events of an historical nature in the classroom.
