ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Bible which includes Judaism as well as Christianity. It is the major scripture with which people in the West have wrestled and accepted or rejected. Much of what we say can be also being applied to the understanding of scripture in other religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism, and it is particularly pertinent regarding Islam. The Bible used to be the staple diet of Religious Education (RE). Today it seems that any work on the Bible may have to be justified. Many religious people indeed claim that the only way that scripture can reveal its secrets is to those who approach it with humility. The importance of teaching about scripture has been highlighted in recent years. One of the effects of the extremist Muslim terrorist attacks has been to direct the attention of moderate Muslims, as of non-Muslims, to the question of how the Qur'n should be interpreted.
