ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the presentation of Boudica and the Boudica myth as it has travelled through time from the period of life until the present. Dio makes Boudica say of Suetonius Paulinus's army let us show them that they are hares and foxes attempting to rule over dogs and wolves, it is perhaps fitting to refer to the British freedom fighter as the Icenian wolf: a fierce creature, symbolic of the untamed wilderness, in opposition to what have often been seen as cowardly and hunted lesser animals. English and European history is not without its Boudicas. A clear linkage between the Icenian and Queen Victoria is apparent in their very names: Boudicas name means victory. The Icenian ruler is depicted in a long flowing robe, a diadem around her head, arms upraised, a spear brandished in her right hand; she rides a chariot, like a Victorian version of the film Ben Hur and behind her are her two daughters.
