Spitamenes and Dataphernes were behind the revolt. Alexander’s forces were massacred in Bactria, the peoples of Bactria and Sogdiana united and from north of the Jaxartes the Sacae (Scythians) mobilised a force. The revolt was the last thing Alexander needed, and he had to act fast before it spread and cost the Macedonians everything. As with Thebes in 335, he determined to make an example of those who defied him; that resistance would be costly.
