In February 1934, just over twelve months after Hitler's appointment as Chancellor, the Nazi newspaper the Völkischer Beobachter published an article drawing a direct parallel between the heroism and sacrifices of the war dead of 1914–18 and the politics of the new Third Reich:
Fallen comrades, the world war was not fought in vain! Blood flowed and hunger reigned for a purpose, you sacrificed your lives for a cause. Your spirit lives on today more than ever. It inspires the youth, the nation, the Reich. Your death created the foundations for our revolution of 1933 1
