ABSTRACT

As it should have emerged in the course of this book, cognitive linguistics is not a unified and monolithic theory, but rather a cluster of linguistic approaches sharing underlying assumptions about the essence of language. Given the interdisciplinary nature of most strands within cognitive linguistics it is not surprising that there are ongoing endeavours to put linguistic theorizing on a safer psychological and neurological footing. This final section summarizes some of these developments, which cut across the chapters of this book, and relates them to current trends.
