ABSTRACT

Industrial Language Training developed from the early 1970s onwards. From the late 1960s, the social, cultural and philosophical issues of how language is used in communication were developing into one of the most rapidly expanding areas of work in the social and linguistic sciences. We have already explained how the social context and the lack of communication which ILT trainers observed in multiethnic workplaces caused us to seek new concepts of language and of language learning. It was, therefore, natural that we should both turn to and seek to contribute to theories of interaction and inter-ethnic communication.
