ABSTRACT

The British remember the war fought by the armed services with pride. The nation celebrates the victory of a people’s army that overcame many setbacks and defeats to beat off its powerful enemies. The memory contains many elements lionised during the war and thus builds on the original interpretation of events. This chapter will therefore concentrate on images of the British soldier, and battles and campaigns that retain a profile in the popular memory. At the same time, the British have also forgotten and lost many aspects of the war fought by the armed services that were considered important at the time. As with most other aspects of the national collective memory of the war, sections have been reshaped, re-emphasised or re-ordered, while still shadowing that known, accepted and celebrated during the conflict itself.
