ABSTRACT
The Aberdeen Coalition is best remembered, often only remembered, for the Crimean War. It can be regarded as the point where there was a disastrous clash between the two traditions, now represented by Aberdeen and Palmerston, and there is substance in that interpretation. If either Aberdeen’s or Palmerston’s policy had been consistently followed, it is possible that war could have been avoided.
