ABSTRACT
A new phase of Indian warfare opened in 1790–92 with the British campaigns against Mysore, the most formidable power of the subcontinent. British military success was founded upon wide-ranging organization, for, if efficient government did not in itself guarantee military achievement, the effective maintenance and deployment of the East India Company’s armies was an essential prerequisite to the expansion of British India.
