ABSTRACT
The ideas of the later Greek moralists touched every corner of ancient culture and therefore were to influence all writers since antiquity. Nevertheless, they were distinct from the scientific and logical writings of Aristotle which overshadowed medieval thought. By considering the ancient sources of humanitas it is possible to understand how the humanists contributed something creative to western thinking by perceiving and reviving a forgotten body of ideas.
