ABSTRACT
For these early years the scanty evidence means that there are many gaps in our understanding. In some later periods, the evidence, both primary and secondary, is so extensive that it is impossible to cover it all. For the years immediately after a d 1000, the historian is trying to make sense of a jigsaw puzzle with most pieces missing.
