ABSTRACT
Co-operation between the kingdoms survived a series of unexpected Scottish royal deaths in the early 1290s, and failure of plans to link the dynasties by marriage of Edward Fs heir to the 7-year-old Scottish queen, Margaret, the Maid of Norway, who died in 1290. Denied this opportunity for peaceful union of the crowns, Edward sought to exploit the succession crisis to establish English control of Scotland.
