ABSTRACT

Despite some mixed experiences, the predominant trend in the regional economy after 1850 was one of increases in production, trade and employ ment. Industrial and commercial growth brought complex developments which were not confined to industry. Transport links, including railways, shipping services and docks, diversified and required more workers. Late Victorian industry needed thousands of work-horses, requiring increased fodder production, breeding, trading and veterinary facilities and manufac ture of harness and trappings of various kinds.
