ABSTRACT

The Death of Alexander the Great, by Nathaniel Lee, was published by James Magnes and Richard Bentley in 1677 and reprinted in 1684, 1694, and 1699. It included an Epistle Dedicatory by Lee to the Earl of Mulgrave, D'. s poem, and a Prologue by Sir Carr Scrope. The Rival Queens was first performed on 17 March 1677 by the King's Company at the Theatre Royal; it was the first play by Lee who, like D., had been educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and possibly also at Westminster School. The play was popular on the Restoration stage, and was reprinted in 1676. Perhaps a reference to the marriage of William of Orange to Princess Mary; Charles II may have agreed to the match because this alliance with a Protestant country would allay suspicions of his covert Catholicism covert, selfish purposes.
