ABSTRACT

Nahum Tate's The Loyal General, a Tragedy was published by Henry Bonwicke in 1680, with a dedication to Edward Tayler which includes complimentary references to D'. s criticism of Shakespeare. For the problematic royalism of Tate's play see Owen 113-20. The play was performed by the Duke's Company at Dorset Garden. On 13 September 1679 Sir Thomas Player, accompanied by several hundred citizens, made a speech at the Guildhall in London, saying 'that it was apparent, what Advantage and Encouragement the Duke of York being a Papist, gave to the Rise and Progress of this Horrid and Damnable Plot', and asking for the guards to be doubled. The year 1641, which saw the Irish Rebellion and rumours of a Popish Plot, was thought of after the Restoration as the beginning of the Civil War, and the parallel of 1641 with 1681 became a commonplace.
